The refugee crisis in Greece
The EU’s Dublin II regulation is a blessing for central countries in the union, because Dublin II says that the country of entry is responsible for refugees when they first land on European soil.
Because most refugees arrive by land or sea, the problem is largely limited to the external boundaries of the European Union. Spain, Italy and Greece are being swamped. Greece recorded 100,000 illegal immigrants last year, most of them taking the short sea route via the border with Turkey. The Greek authorities are overwhelmed and without any real support from the EU, the situation has become serious, especially for the asylum seekers themselves.
